Look at the Colors of the Walls

Painting your fireplace can give it a fresh look and make it a focal point for the room. However, you must know how to choose the right paint color to ensure your finished project looks great. It is also important to consider the color of the rest of your home when selecting the right shade for your fireplace tile. You may pair a bold shade with a neutral for a more vibrant appearance or choose a dark shade for a modernistic look.

Using bright colors for your fireplace can create a fun and whimsical atmosphere in your space. Mint green is popular for fireplaces to establish a cottage-core look, while peach or periwinkle can create a similar aesthetic. Alternatively, pastels like yellow and lavender can add a pop of color to the space and complement ornate or antique fireplace features.

You can’t go wrong with neutral shades for a classic and timeless look. White, ivory, and cream are all great options for fireplaces. For a more contemporary design, you can also use matte black for your fireplace to create a bold appearance.

When you plan to paint fireplace tile, choose a heat-resistant paint that’s safe for your living space. You’ll also need to do some prep work to prepare the surface before applying the paint. This includes cleaning the area and removing any edges you plan on painting.

Choose a Color Similar to the Wall

Choosing the right paint colors for your fireplace tile is important since it’s a focal point of any room. It can help the room look cohesive and offer a bold contrast to other features. When deciding on the color of your fireplace, consider the hues already present in the space. For example, if your room has a blue accent wall and furniture, you can choose a gray paint for the fireplace that will complement the colors of the other elements.

Another option is to use a similar shade of white to your walls when painting your fireplace tile. A white firebox provides a clean, polished appearance and works well with almost any color scheme. If you plan on using the space for entertaining, a warm white will highlight your fireplace with a soft glow while offering a brighter appearance.

If your fireplace surround is made of natural stone, choose a color that echoes those hues to give the space a cohesive feel. For instance, this Mediterranean-inspired terra cotta fireplace features earthy shades of brown and tan that work with the other rustic wood beams in the room to create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.

Ceramic tile is a true design chameleon and can work with any traditional style. In this nautical space, navy blue tile with blue boat imagery is the perfect touch to pull the whole look together.

Choose a Color Different from the Wall

If you like the look of a traditional fireplace but need help working it into a modern or contemporary space, try painting the surround and mantel a color different from the wall. This technique helps bring the focus to other room features instead of the fireplace.

The color of the brick tile can also make a big difference in how your fireplace looks. For example, this gas fireplace takes traditional elements like wide brick-sized tiles and an offset pattern. It adds a modern touch with ceramic architectural molding and speckled earthy glaze.

Another way to change the look of your fireplace is by adding texture to the surround and mantel. This can be done by choosing paint with a higher sheen or using a textured finish, such as a stucco finish. The high sheen on this fireplace helps it stand out and adds an extra element of drama to the room.

No matter your home style, a painted fireplace can help transform the space and give it a fresh new look. If you need help selecting the right paint colors, ask a local True Value hardware store’s Certified Color Expert for pointers based on your preferences and specific needs. They can even help you create a custom-mixed color sample that you can take home to see how it looks before making a final decision.

Go Monochromatic

While some homeowners may choose to contrast the color of their fireplace tile with the walls, a monochromatic look can also be a very beautiful option. It can give the fireplace a bold appearance that stands out and makes it the room’s focal point. When choosing a monochromatic color scheme, it is best to choose warm and inviting colors. Deeper colors create a moody feel, while brighter hues evoke a playful, energetic vibe.

For example, a pinkish brick fireplace would look lovely coated in a rich, creamy paint color like Maritime White. This soft off-white has subtle yellow and taupe undertones that complement the pinkish brick nicely. Another option is a soft light gray paint color such as Metropolis. This neutral has a warm and inviting feel that will compliment the brick without looking too stark.

If you want to go even more monochromatic, a shade such as ivory or cream can work. These neutrals are warm and inviting, and they will blend seamlessly with the existing color of the fireplace tiles.

When painting your fireplace, be sure to use durable latex paint that can stand up to the heat levels of your fireplace. Also, be sure to choose an eggshell or semi-gloss finish to help minimize any reflection from the flames.
